How to store Ginger

Ginger is a flowering plant (2) whose roots are used as a spice and medicine. Adding ginger to our daily food intake can boost our immune system immensely. Ginger originated from Asia and is one of the first spice to reach Europe (1).

Ginger is widely used to cure nausea and stomach ache (3). Also a remedy for GI cancer (4) which has found a lot of occurance in United States.

How to store Ginger
Method 1 - most common

Ginger
  1. Ginger has a lot of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients (see benefits).
  2. Ginger is important because it is fully loaded with antioxidants.
  3. It makes food tasty and nutritious.
  4. While buying or picking, Ginger, should be bright and fresh.
  5. Ginger should be smooth and firm in texture.
  6. Do not purchase wrinkled, blackish, and light in weight ginger.
  7. Do not peel.
  8. Wash it thoroughly, under tap water.
  9. If it has a lot of mud, you can use a toothbrush to clean.
  10. Let it dry naturally.
  11. We can get a plastic bag (zipper plastic bag) in the market, which is airtight.
  12. Take Ginger which is now dry and clean.
  13. Place that Ginger into a tissue paper.
  14. Tissue paper can hold extra moisture and keep Ginger dry.
  15. Now put the Ginger into the plastic bag cover the zip.
  16. Be careful to remove the air inside the plastic bag. (zipper storage bag) 
  17. Stock this in the refrigerator.

Method 2 - with Lime

  2. Peeled out the Ginger with the help of a spoon or knife.
  3. Scratch the Ginger with the help of edges of the spoon. 
  4. After peeling wash the Ginger.
  5. Let it dry under the fan.
  6. Take a glass jar/container.
  7. Fill the container with lemon juice.
  8. Put the Ginger in the glass container.
  9. It may happen that the taste will change a little, but there is no side effects of the lemon juice.
  10. Make sure that the container is airtight.
  11. Stock the jar/container in a refrigerator.
  12. In this way, we can store Ginger till 1 to 2 months.

Method 3 - with Vinegar

  2. Fill the container with vinegar.
  3. Place the stripped Ginger in the jar/container.
  4. Make sure that the container cap should be closed tightly (airtight).
  5. In this way, you can store the Ginger root for 2 to 3 months.

Method 4 - glass jar

  1. Use method 2.1 to 2.5.
  2. Make small pieces of the Ginger root.
  3. Do not peel.
  4. Now put the piece in tissue paper and rolled it.
  5. Take a plastic bag or glass container as per your availability.
  6. Stock it in the refrigerator.
  7. You can store the Ginger for 2 months.

Method 5 - with Vodka

Method 6 - with Sherry

  2. Fill Sherry wine into the container.
  3. Put Ginger into the jar/container.
  4. Make sure that the cap of the container close tightly.
  5. We can store till 1-2 months.
  6. We can Stock it in the deep freezer or cold storage.
  7. This also not so common way on how you can store ginger.

Method 7 - Rice wine

  2. Filled rice wine in the container.
  3. Place the stripped Ginger in the jar/container.
  4. Close the container cap tightly.
  5. Stock in the refrigerator.
  6. You can use it for 2 months.

  7. Stock it in the deep freeze.
  8. Write the packing date on the container, as remember for the expiry date.

Method 10 - Japan Rice wine

  3. Place the stripped Ginger in the jar/container.
  4. Tightly close the container cap.
  5. Stock in the deep freeze.
  6. You can use it for 6 months.

Method 11 - Glass jar/container

  1. Take 2 pieces of fresh Ginger.
  2. Wash it under the tap water.
  3. Remove the peel from the peeler.
  4. Rewash it.
  5. Make it dry with the help of tissue paper.
  6. Take a cheese grater.
  7. Grate the Ginger on the grater.
  8. Make a fine minced (almost pulped) Ginger.
  9. Let it dry at normal room temperature.
  10. Take an aluminium foil spread the minced Ginger on the foil.
  11. Keep it in the deep freeze
  12. After 5 hours, collect the minced Ginger.
  13. Make small pieces of iced minced Ginger.
  14. Put it in the glass container.
  15. You can Stock it for 2 months.

Method 12 - Growing the plant

  2. Pour the soil in the pot.
  3. Dig the soil of the pot.
  4. Put the Ginger. Important point to note is we have to keep the nodes upwards.
  5. Cover the Ginger by soil.
  6. Keep watering.
  7. Within 4-5 days Ginger plant grows.
  8. Whenever we need a Ginger, we can dig soil and get a piece of Ginger.
  9. Our plant grows day by day; it will not harm the plant if you get a part of it.

  11. Fresh Ginger will be available for us 24*7.
Method 13 - Deep freeze

  2. Cut the Ginger into small pieces.
  3. Put into the grinder or food processer makes it a fine paste. 
  4. Do not add water.
  5. Strain the pulp using a tea strainer or cotton cloth.
  6. After straining the ginger paste.
  7. Collect the juice in a bowl.
  8. Take an ice tray.
  9. Pour the liquid into the tray.
  10. Keep it in the deep freeze.
  11. You can Stock it for 6 months.
  12. Whenever you need it, you can use 1 Ginger cube.
  13. Do not throw the pulp of the Ginger.
  14. You can Stock it in the freezer tray just like the juice and use in recipes.
  15. Or you can Stock Ginger extract into the glass container.
  16. You can also use without strain paste for making Ginger cubes.

Method 14 - Dried powdered

  2. Put the pieces on the plate or dish.
  3. Cover the dish by a thin cotton cloth that will make it safe from dust.
  4. Let it dry under the sunlight.
  5. It takes time to dry ginger as water composition is 79% (6).
  6. Dry until the Ginger pieces get crunchy. 
  7. It will take 4 to 5 days.
  8. After drying.
  9. Put the pieces into the mixer.
  10. Make it a fine powder.
  11. Take a clean and dry glass container.
  12. Stock Ginger powder in a glass container.
  13. Close the cap of the container tightly.
  14. Do not Stock in the refrigerator.
  15. Always keep in the dry place.
  16. You can use Ginger powder throughout the year.
  17. Take a little precaution whenever you open the container, after taking the powder, close the cap tightly every time. 
  18. Do not keep it open for too long.
